General Remarks

The stretcher once held "Grey No 1, 1918," a now lost painting exhibited in 1923 at Anderson Galleries as no. 102. Inscription 1 may indicate preparatory work. "303" in stretcher inscription 4 refers to The Intimate Gallery, Room 303, in The Anderson Galleries building. See cat. nos. 1448–55, 1471. (Source: Lynes, 1999)

Inscriptions

Stretcher:

  1. "11/1/57" (graphite, twice)
  2. "102/1918" (Alfred Stieglitz, graphite)
  3. "Grey No 1" (Alfred Stieglitz, graphite)
  4. "303 O'Keeffe" (Alfred Stieglitz, graphite)
  5. "Stieglitz {crossed out} #4" (George Of, graphite) Backing: "11/1/57" (graphite) (Source: Lynes, 1999)

According to 1996 NGA examination report: “The stretcher is original, although pencil inscriptions on its reverse indicate that it was first used for another painting. “102/1918” may refer to the first painting’s exhibition date, of 1918, and catalogue number, 102. The title “Gray no. 1” could also refer to this lost painting…”The date “11/1/59”, written twice in Georgia O’Keeffe’s handwriting, may refer to the date of Winter Road. “O’Keeffe/303” is written in Stieglitz’s handwriting, and the “303” refers to their New York City address.” (Source: NGA, 2025)
