In this semiabstract composition, overlapping geometric shapes in shades of white, pink, red, and gray come together to evoke a series of skyscrapers that fill the canvas. Three roses, one red, one pink, and one blue, dot the composition. More skyscrapers in shades of white and blue appear in the background, reinforcing the feeling of a dense, busy city.

General Remarks

Not recorded Downtown Gallery Archive. Whitney Archive indicates, "Large panel (illustrated at right) based on central section of Study. . . . Note: Miss O'Keeffe is going to destroy this." This work and a drawing of it [perhaps similar to cat. no. 800] were submitted to the 1932 mural competition for Radio City Music Hall, New York, on basis of Stieglitz–O'Keeffe correspondence; O'Keeffe received the commission, but withdrew as a result of building delays that compromised the time she needed for executing the work. Reproduced and titled Skyscrapers in Springfield Sunday Union and Republican (May 1932). (Source: Lynes, 1999)
