General Remarks
Double entries Downtown Gallery Archive. Whitney Archive indicates, "Infor. Received from the Memorial Art Gallery, Univ. Of Rochester 6/29/51. They have acquired this picture which was formerly in Encyclopedia Britannica Coll. They said it was actually acquired directly from Sen. William Benton." Date on stretcher inscription 1 relates to cat. no. 441. Whitney Archive, Abiquiú Notebooks date 1933. Downtown Gallery Archive dates 1930 and 1933. Dated 1931 on basis of Stieglitz–O'Keeffe correspondence and mention in Art News (1932) review of 1931–32 exhibition. Pictured in 1931–32 New York (An American Place) Norman installation photograph, see Appendix III, figure 51A. (Source: Lynes, 1999)
