General Remarks

Whitney Archive indicates, "Exam. at Amer. Place, April 1946. . . . On backing: In pencil by O'Keeffe, 'Small Hills Near Alcalde' 30 [not verified]. . . . Ptd. 1929. Note: This is same as above as I examined it in the above sale. Same measurements –– same information written by O'Keeffe on back. It is illustrated in the State Dept. catalogue. Bought from War Assets Adm. sale, 1948, by the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Alabama." Whitney Archive, Abiquiú Notebooks associate this work with the 1930 New York (An American Place) exhibition, but the verso inscription indicates that it was painted in 1930, and thus it could not have been in that exhibition. Stretcher inscription 2 indicates that the stretcher once housed another painting. Whitney Archive, Downtown Gallery Archive, Abiquiú Notebooks date 1929. Dated 1930 on basis of verso inscription. Pictured in 1931 New York (An American Place) Stieglitz installation photograph, see Appendix III, figure 47. See cat. nos. 681, 682, 689–95. (Source: Lynes, 1999)

“Georgia O’Keeffe 1930” is painted on the verso of the canvas; however, no visible markings by O’Keeffe state “Small Hills Near Alcalde 30” as was listed in the Whitney Archive as published by not verified in the Lynes publication.
