General Remarks
Whitney Archive indicates "Sold to University of Minnesota Gal. Note: This exhibition was held Jan.–Feb. 1928 and is of paintings done in 1927." Abiquiú Notebooks indicates, "Bought from A.S. In 1937." Has been exhibited as either horizontal or vertical; orientation subject of debate. Backing and edge of canvas affixed to 30 inch stretcher are marked "Top," indicating vertical orientation. Orientation also based on 1930 New York (An American Place) Stieglitz installation photograph; see Appendix III, figure 32. This shows the painting placed on a shelf, leaning against a wall, not part of the exhibition. (Source: Lynes, 1999)
