A huge orangish-red poppy with a black center stretches across the landscape-oriented composition. Its green stem is just visible at the bottom of the canvas. The flower contrasts with a plain white background.

General Remarks

Whitney Archive, Abiquiú Notebooks indicate, "Gift to Mr. Rich." Abiquiú Notebooks notes backing inscription, but records inscription date "1927." Backing inscription dates 1928. Whitney Archive indicates, "Painted 1927." Dated 1927 on basis of inclusion in 1928 exhibition. (Source: Lynes, 1999)
