Title (1999 Catalogue Raisonné)
Grey and White
Source of title: Whitney Archive, Downtown Gallery Archive, Abiquiú Notebooks.
General Remarks
Whitney Archive, Abiquiú Notebooks indicate, "Exam. at Amer. Place, April 1946. . . . On backing: In graphite by O'Keeffe 'Grey and White' – 25. Initials in circle" [not verified]. Whitney Archive indicates, "Grey and white abstraction. Probably in 1926 exhibition of which we have no catalogue." This and other paintings were reproduced as advertising posters by Cheney Silks in the 1920s: see cat. nos. 479A, 480, 480A, and Appendix II, nos. 79–81. Orientation in Abiquiú Notebooks differs (upside down), but publication of image in Cheney Silks advertisement verifies orientation, see cat. no. 479A. (Source: Lynes, 1999)
