Tall, craggy gray hills with hints of red and yellow spread across the canvas. A few blue-gray bushes populate the flat land at the base of the hills. A small strip of clear blue sky is visible above the landscape.

General Remarks
Museum files record lost inscription from verso: OK ☆ {star} (unidentified hand, medium unknown); "One of O'Keeffe's best works in her personal collection" (probably Stieglitz, medium unknown). O'Keeffe wrote: "The Black Place is about one hundred and fifty miles from Ghost Ranch, and as you come to it over a hill, it looks like a mile of elephants—grey hills all about the same size with almost white sand at their feet" (Georgia O'Keeffe 1976, unpaginated, text accompanying entry 59).
