General Remarks

Not recorded Whitney Archive. O'Keeffe wrote: "I have a small piece of an Antelope Head.. . that I like very much" (O'Keeffe to Edith Halpert, 8 August 1954, Archive of American Art). "We should have his [Mr. Marcus] picture [for 1954 exhibition] if we can get it — it is so different than other things and I think one of the best" (O'Keeffe to Edith Halpert, 26 February 1955, Archive of American Art). "Someone gave me a very fine antelope head with horns. It was supposed to be the old buck's head that had been shot.... There were many drawings and paintings of the antelope. Our antelope had horns that turned back with a short forward prong. But I also had horns that turned in" (Some Memories of Drawings [1988], unpaginated). (Source: Lynes, 1999)
